Dorus Amsterdam is the newest cafe in Amsterdam Oud West. Well, not so new anymore. Dorus opened back in February, replacing a former unloved CoffeeRoastery on the corner of De Clercqustraat and Da Costakaade. Over a month or so, I watched as they transformed the place into Dorus. I could not believe that these people would be so foolish to replace a cafe with yet another cafe. But, to my pleasant surprise, and that of the neighborhood – Dorus is a winner.
Decor at Dorus Amsterdam
In fact, it hardly looks the same at all. Dorus is brightly lit with pastel blues and greens and clean, modern decor. The light colors mixed with the dark furniture are reminiscent of a modern Dutch brown cafe.
They even have some funky bean bag chairs, that could be art or could be actual seating in the second room. At Dorus Amsterdam, design matters. And this is the perfect place to catch up with friends, spend an afternoon alone or even get some work done.
They also have a record player and what looks to be a DJ booth in the second room, with vinyls on the walls. I’m hoping there will be some surprise pop up parties soon.
And if the weather is good enough, there’s some seating on the canal.
Dorus Amsterdam is of course, a cafe. Coffee culture and Amsterdam go hand in hand, especially in Oud West. But to stand out in Amsterdam you need to bring something special. It’s true coffee places open and close nearly every day on every corner, so what makes Dorus unique?
Attention to detail. From the menu, to the art to the paper your foccaccia sandwich comes wrapped in, details matter at Dorus.
Food at Dorus Amsterdam
At Dorus they make their own fresh crusty focaccia sandwiches. The bread is from the famous Loof bakery nearby. They slice their own meats on site and serve the focaccia sandwiches with only the freshest vegetables, cheeses and sauces. These are definitely the best thing on the menu. In addition they have some other dishes like their mushroom toast and soup specials. I loved the zucchini soup I tried. The dishes are all affordable lunch options. The sandwiches were priced around €8.50 and the soup €6.50.
They also have some homemade cakes and pies. Of course, a Dutch apple pie. But our favorite was the banana bread. They grill the banana bread and serve it plated, warm. How could you pass this up?
Drinks at Dorus
Coffee comes first of course. But at Dorus Amsterdam they also have a menu of other warm and cold drinks. This includes special lemonades, juices and my favorite, matcha. Plant based and regular milk are both available. And they offer free water, thank God.
