I first visited Glasgow in 2016. At that time, I left feeling underwhelmed by Scottish cuisine. I never thought I’d be back in Glasgow, but when my cousin said she was studying abroad, I knew I’d have to join the party. One of the highlights of our cousin weekend was the Sunday Roast at Chateau-X.
We made our reservations online and booked two tables, one for five and one for four. When we arrived the host recommended we head to the bar across the street and he’d arrange for us to all sit together. Excellent news. Note to self, next time call.
After a quick drink at Buck’s Bar, we headed back and the host led us to our table downstairs. I always get nervous when the table’s downstairs. I love to be in the most lively or beautiful part of the restaurant. Let’s face it, typically downstairs doesn’t quite meet the mark. But I was pleasantly surprised. The atmosphere held up and there was even a bar to bring the whole room together.
We were at Chateau-X for Sunday Roast. To start, we began with cocktails – delectable cocktails. Many of us took a risk ordering a Matcha cocktail – Matcha Made in Heaven, and that it was. Why was it a risk? One, matcha in the evening may keep me up all night. Two, it was a whisky base and I personally can’t stand whisky. The odds were against this cocktail, yet somehow it ranks in my top cocktails of the year. It was balanced, smooth, earthy and beautiful all at once. If you love or hate whisky, give it a go.
Next, we ordered the sourdough bread and fried oysters to start. The sourdough bread was warm and fluffy on the inside with a crunchy crust on the outside, I only wish the butter had been salted. I also prefer my oysters raw to fried, but they were a nice burst of flavor to kick off the meal. The others raved about them.
Next up, the main course.
Sometimes a Sunday Roast can leave you sluggish and overstuffed, so I went into it weary. It was nearly 8pm and we were expected to go play mini golf after. I needed to keep up my energy. Fortunately, this Sunday Roast is refined, simple and portioned appropriately.
When the food first arrived we doubted if we had enough, but it was just right. Between nine, we ordered four Sunday Roasts to share family style– one rare, two medium rare and one medium.
I can honestly say the steak was the best prepared meat I’ve had in a very long time, I am still dreaming about how tender and juicy it was. In fact, they give you this funny cleaver knife to cut the steak, great for photos, but cuts like butter. Just don’t hack away at it. Let the knife do the job on its own. Magic. There was of course a gravy but the meat was bursting with flavor on its own, I barely used it.
Next up, the sides. Let’s face it, just like Thanksgiving, the sides are usually everyone’s favorite part of a Sunday Roast. Cheesy cauliflower, roast potatoes, mashed potatoes, string beans, root vegetables and Yorkshire pudding and gravy. The cheesy cauliflower was my favorite, I could have licked the ramequin – but manners. Ok, no manners, I did lick it.
The other plates were delicious as well. The only downside was the Yorkshire pudding. It seemed a bit overdone to me. I’ll be honest though, I am not an expert here, and I don’t believe I’ve yet to find a great Yorkshire pudding. So don’t trust me!
And last, we ordered a couple desserts to split, rounding out the meal with a bit of sweet. My favorite was the salted caramel sticky date pudding. Ooey gooey greatness.
Overall, the service, atmosphere, cocktails, appetizers, roast and dessert made this the best meal I’ve had in Scotland to date. I’ll be recommending it widely! If you’re in Glasgow, make sure you reserve a spot at Chateau-X for their Sunday Roast or stop by any other day of the week for their dinner menu, you won’t regret it.
