Van Stepele Koekmakerij genuinely makes the best cookies in Amsterdam. And arguably the best chocolate cookies in Europe if not the world. Just ask the locals! Or the insane line of tourists that gather every Saturday and Sunday.
Van Stepele cookies are dark, rich, indulgent and addictive. Like a small chocolate ball of heaven.
The cookie shop is located on a narrow alley just off the Singel canal in the heart of Amsterdam. I like to think of this spot as cookie alley. On weekdays, you would likely walk by without even noticing this narrow hole-in-the-wall. But on weekends, the line wraps around the corner and persistent bikers ding their bells at the oblivious drooling crowd.
Stepping inside is like traveling back in time. The shop has an old school charm reminiscent of simpler days. The sweet aroma of chocolate fills the air the moment you open the door and soft piano music plays delicately in the background.
Hard work! After months of baking, tasting and laughing – the Van Stepele Koekmakerij cookie makers finally decided they got it right – and it seems like Amsterdam agrees.
The chocolate cookies start off with a rich dough made from dark Valrhona cacao and a filling of melted white chocolate. Vera and her team bake around the clock, so more likely than not, the cookies will be warm when you pop inside.
If you happen to stop in on a not so busy day, don’t be too disappointed. Warm or cold, these cookies are sure to make you smile. Crisp like a brownie on the outside and warm and gooey like molten white lava cake on the inside.
Don’t like chocolate? Go somewhere else. Van Stepele Koekmakerij only serves chocolate cookies. Yup, that’s it. You can also grab a cup of Kusmi tea or Bocca coffee to wash the cookies down.
Hurry and get there. These cookies sell out fast.
In 2024, the original shop has relocated to a new, bigger storefront. Bye, bye to the charming cozy street and hello to Rokin!

Hi Jade. I recently visited Amsterdam with my daugher and visited the cookie shop. I have posted a link to your above post (with acknowledgement) on my Weekly Photo Challenge post of this evening, on same topic. Thank you.
